“Hi, how are you?”
“Great, thanks. And you?”
This little greeting is part of many cultures. More often than not it is a formality rather than a genuine question. How many times do we say we are great, while we are actually not?
Why don’t we just say “No sorry, today I feel like crap”? I guess there are several reasons, some of them personal and some of them cultural. But the main reason, at least for me, is not willing to show my real face. If I say I am not feeling to great today the other might think I am a boring, negative person.
You know, that is not the norm in society. There seems to be this unspoken rule that we should be happy and succesful at all times.
I respond differently in different situations. With good friends I am always straight and honest and I treat this question as genuine. When I greet a stranger I treat it as a formality. But why not just always be honest? Why hide?
Ash Beckham has a beautiful answer to this question. She gave coming out of the closet a whole new meaning. Enjoy your Sunday!
